Placement Test
Aim and Details about the Placement Test:
The aim of the test is for you to find out what level of English you have. The computer
marks your test. The total score is 60 marks.
Once you know your level you will them know which quizzes, articles, tutorial and
employment issues to use on the site.
Here are the levels and marks you are expected to have to study at those levels.
1 to 20 marks = An elementary level of English = Level 1
21 to 30 marks = A Post
Elementary level of English = Level 1
31 to 40 marks = An Intermediate level of
English = Level 2
41 to 50 marks = A Post Intermediate level of English = Level
2 and 3
51 to 60 marks = An Advanced level of English = Level 3
There is no fixed time limit but you should not take more than one hour to sit the
test.
Do not use a dictionary.
You can resit the placement test at any time to see if your general English language
skills have improved.
Sections of the Placement Test
Vocabulary: 30 marks
Grammar: 15 marks
Reading Comprehension: 15 marks
Total score = 60 marks
What do the levels mean?
An elementary level of English (1 to 20 marks in the online placement test).
You know up to 1,000 English words and their meanings. Your English grammar is very
weak. You understand very little of an English newspaper and find it very hard to
read and understand a short academic article. You need a bilingual dictionary to
find the meaning of most words.
A Post Elementary level of English (21 to 30 marks in the online placement
test)
You know up to 2,000 English words and their meanings. Your English grammar is weak.
You can read and understand approximately 30 - 50% of an English newspaper article.
You find it quite hard to read and understand a short academic article. You require
a bilingual dictionary to find the meaning of many words in an article.
An Intermediate level of English (31 to 40 marks in the online placement
test)
You know up to 3,000 English words and their meanings. This is enough to read and
understand 90% of an English newspaper. You English grammar is OK but not strong.
You can understand up to 80% of a short academic article easily. You do not require
a bilingual dictionary but can use an English -English dictionary.
A Post Intermediate level of English (41 to 50 marks in the online placement
test)
You know up to 5,000 English words and their meanings. This is enough to read and
understand 95% of an English newspaper. You English grammar is quite strong. You
can understand up to 90 - 95% of a short article easily. Mostly you use an English
- English dictionary to find the meanings of words.
An Advanced level of English (51 to 60 marks in the online placement test)
You know more than 5,000 English words and their meanings. This is enough to read
and understand 98 - 100% of an English newspaper. Your English grammar is very strong.
You can understand up to 98 - 100% of a short academic article easily. You always
use an English - English dictionary to find the meanings of words.
